Scientists conducted the first successful head transplant

A team of surgeons from Harbin Medical University (China) successfully transplanted a human head to a corpse. This was announced on Friday at a press conference in Vienna by Italian surgeon Sergio Canavero, who announced his intention to transplant a human head back in 2015 year.
“The first transplant was performed on a corpse. The next step will be a head transplant from a donor with registered brain death,” the newspaper quotes Canavero’s statement. The Telegraph.
It is reported that the operation took 18 hours. Specialists managed to connect the spine, nerves and blood vessels. Kanavero, adding that documents describing the medical details of the transplant will be published in the next few days.
In this case, the Italian surgeon noted that his ultimate goal remains the transplantation of the human brain into a donor body.
“My initial goal was not a head transplant, but a brain transplant. The Chinese are pursuing the goal of curing previously incurable diseases. My goal is to prolong human life, because I consider aging a disease that needs to be cured,” Canavero explained.
Note that in 2015, Sergio Canavero announced the launch of a project in which he planned to transplant a volunteer’s head onto a donor body, connecting the spinal cord and brain using a special procedure he called the “GEMINI protocol.” The first participant in the experiment agreed to be Russian programmer Valery Spiridonov, who was confined to a wheelchair due to muscular dystrophy. The disease progresses every year, and it is difficult for Russians to control their body. Therefore, he agreed to the operation, even despite the risk of not surviving it.
