The Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia, which is famous for its extraordinary beauty, is on the verge of extinction. Researcher Tim Flaner, a professor from Australia, told reporters about this.

According to scientists, the cause of the threatening situation is climate change - water temperatures are rising. This threatens to destroy the world's largest coral system, about 3 thousand kilometers long.

In May of this year, researchers discovered that about a third of the corals in the northern part of the reef were already dead. In total, destructive processes affected 93% of corals. They began to discolor. “Our research in May showed that around 60% of corals were bleached,” said Amanda McKinzie, chief executive of the Australian Climate Council. — Another 19-20% is covered with brown algae. A few weeks ago we returned to the site to check what was going on. We saw that most of them were already dead.”

John Rumney, who has been traveling to the Great Barrier Reef for about 15 years, told reporters there is another effect of climate change in the region. “The number of fish has changed significantly. There’s less of it,” Rumney said.
