Scientists explain why so many couples get engaged to Christmas and New Year

Have you noticed an unusually large number of wedding photos that appear in social networks between Thanksgiving Day and New Year? Believe me, this is not your imagination.

According to a British company survey Chillisauce, 31% of respondents consider Christmas Eve to be the best day of the year to make an offer, 7% chose Christmas, 2% celebrated December 26 and 18% called New Year the best date to get engaged.

Associate Professor of Sociology at the Appalachian State Institute Ellen Lamont derived a theory explaining this phenomenon, writes Quartz.

In her opinion, getting engaged during the Christmas holidays is a symbolic gesture.

“Holidays create a sense of family because of the rituals and family traditions of celebration. You literally feel like you are family during the celebration, and by proposing marriage, you are symbolically creating a new family,” Lamont said.

She added that Christmas and New Year are times when people tend to take stock of their year and make pivotal decisions.

Lamont noted that January is also the month with the highest rates of divorce, because the holiday emotions can play both a positive and a negative role.

The sociologist stressed that in addition to the symbolic meaning of these holidays for the start of family life, they also have practical significance, because these days the whole family usually gathers together, therefore it is much easier to inform them about the engagement and celebrate this joyful event with them than at other times of the year.
