Scientists have discovered thousands of mysterious holes on the seabed near Big Sur (California). Writes about this Fox News.

Researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) studied the seabed in Big Sur when they discovered strange holes.

Large openings, described as holes, have an average width of about 600 feet (183 m) and a depth of 16 feet (almost 5 meters). In a statement, MBARI noted that it first discovered some of the marks in 1999. However, subsequent studies by MBARI and other organizations have revealed more than 5200 holes scattered over an area of ​​500 square miles (1 294 sq / km).

In addition, thousands of small holes, known as microcavities, have also been discovered. Researchers have discovered about 15 000 microdeeps, which on average are 11 feet (3,35 m) wide and 3 feet (0,91 m) in depth.

The discovery was described by MBARI researchers Yves Landsten and Charles Paul.

“The depressions in this area are holes in the seafloor that occur in softer sediments, but they are morphologically distinct,” Lundsten said. “The cause and persistence of the spots is still a mystery, but we find no evidence that they were created from gas or liquid on the seabed in the recent past. Microgrooves are newly formed erosional features; they are not “starting marks.” Overall, a lot more work is needed to understand how all these holes were formed, and work continues."

Scientists seek to understand how openings formed on the seabed.

In a separate study, revealed at the fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union, the researchers gave fresh information about the location of the "nuclear battlefield" by mapping the test craters and wrecks of warships.
