Scientists are close to making pills against aging
Anti-aging tablets may soon become a reality.
Scientists from the University of Nottingham (Britain) conducted a series of studies, the results which can assist in the creation of pharmaceuticals that slow down the aging process of the body, and in addition, to stop the development of Alzheimer's and Parkinson’s diseases, reports New York Post.
Scientists investigated a family of proteins called carbonic anhydrases in science, which are located inside the mitochondria, the “cellular power stations,” which convert the oxygen we breathe into energy needed by the body. Scientists have shown that there is a chance to fight aging due to a special protein of the carbonic anhydrase family, located in a protein cell.
The discovery was made when scientists conducted an experiment with mice of young and middle age. Using a special process called 2D gel electrophoresis, the scientists separated all the proteins found in the mitochondria of brain cells and muscles from the brain of young mice and middle-aged mice, comparing the acquired samples.
It turned out that carbonic anhydrase in the brain of middle-aged mice is contained much more than in young individuals, and it shows great activity there. The high content of this protein in organisms with neurodegenerative disorders has a destructive effect on the body, which suggests the association of this protein with Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases.
After that, scientists introduced carbonic acid to the worms, and found that it shortened the duration of their life, that is, led to premature aging.
Experiments have shown that the worm's body does not in any way fight the effects of protein.
Now scientists have to find substances that can affect carbonic anhydrase in order to understand whether they can, using these substances, create a real cure for aging.
