Cleaning may end up in a hospital: bacteria-infected cleaning products are recalled in the US

Colgate-Palmolive is recalling nearly 5 million bottles of its popular Fabuloso cleaning products because they may contain dangerous bacterial species. Writes about it NBC New York.

In a recall notice issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the company said the recall is for Fabuloso multi-purpose cleaners in lavender, lemon, passion fruit, spring freshness, and ocean scents. The issue does not appear to affect Fabuloso Antibacterial variants or other Fabuloso products.

The recalled items were sold online at Amazon.com and other websites, as well as at Dollar General, Family Dollar, The Home Depot, Sam's Club, Walmart and other major retail chains across the country.

Prices for goods ranged from $1 to $11, cleaning products were sold from December 2022 to January 2023.

According to the CPSC notice, no preservative was added to these products during production, resulting in a risk of growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas fluorescens, bacteria that are widespread in soil and water.

People with weakened immune systems, medical devices, or underlying lung conditions who have been exposed to the bacteria are at risk of a serious infection that may require treatment.

Bacteria can enter the body through inhalation, through the eyes, or through broken skin. People with healthy immune systems are usually not affected by these bacteria. No illnesses or injuries were reported.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Fabuloso product and contact Colgate-Palmolive for a full refund or free product replacement. To receive a refund or replacement, consumers must take a photo of the UPC as well as the product batch code and fill out a return form, which can be found on the website. www.fabulosorecall.com.

Consumers are encouraged to dispose of the bottle without first emptying it, as there is a risk of environmental contamination.
