'Get out now': US ready to extend anti-Russian sanctions on Nord Stream 2 investors
The US has warned companies involved in Nord Stream 2 and Turkish Stream about possible sanctions, reports "Voice of America". Secretary of State Mike Pompeo noted that these “Russian influence projects” are harming Ukraine.
Firms that worked on gas pipelines from Russia before the adoption of the U.S. sanction law in 2017 can now be subject to sanctions.
The United States has paved the way for the application of sanctions in relation to the international gas pipelines Nord Stream 2 and Turkish Stream against European and other international firms that were involved in these projects even before the adoption of the US sanctions law “On Countering America’s Adversaries” with the help of sanctions “(Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act - English) in 2017. This law provides for the possibility of applying sanctions to Russia for interference in political processes in the United States, etc. The New York Times reports this. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made a corresponding statement on Wednesday, July 15, while talking to the media.
Thus, according to The New York Times, the companies that worked on these pipelines before the adoption of the CAATSA did not have sanctions before.
“Today, the Department of State updated guidance on the use of authorities under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act.” Now they include Nord Stream 2 and the second branch of the Turkish Stream. These actions put U.S. investments or other activities related to these Russian export pipelines at risk of sanctions,” Pompeo said.

Pompeo called the US action "a clear warning to companies that facilitate and support Russia's harmful influence projects."
“Get out now or you may face consequences,” Pompeo said.
The US Secretary of State also stated that Russian projects are not commercial.
“These are the Kremlin’s key tools for expanding and exploiting Europe’s dependence on Russian energy supplies. These instruments harm Ukraine by cutting it off from the gas that flows through this key democracy. This is a tool that ultimately undermines transatlantic security,” he emphasized. “The United States stands ready to help our European friends meet their energy needs.”
Pompeo warned that he would raise this topic during his planned trip to the UK and Denmark.
