American murderer in Greece told the terrible details of the crime

A resident of Crete was accused of murder and rape after he confessed that he attacked an American woman who disappeared on this Greek island while attending a conference.

59-year-old Suzanne Eaton disappeared on July 2 while jogging. Five days later, her mutilated body was found in a cave that served as a bunker during World War II, writes USA Today.

The police chief of Crete, Lieutenant General Konstantin Lagudakis, said that the investigation was aided by recordings from surveillance cameras. Authorities are awaiting forensic evidence, he added.

“A particularly important element of our investigation was the discovery of fresh tire tracks near the tunnel,” he said. “This fact, combined with the position of the body at the time of discovery, led us to believe that it was moved to the bunker after the murder.”

Lagudakis said that the suspect first contradicted himself during interrogation, and then, faced with irrefutable evidence gathered by the police, he broke down and confessed.

Police Director Chania Paris Chinopoulos noted that the suspect said that he was “trying to find someone for sex,” and accidentally chose Eaton when he saw her running along the road.

Crete’s police spokeswoman Eleni Papatanasiu told reporters that the man had told the police that he had hit Eaton with his car twice, then shut her mouth, put her in the trunk and drove her into the bunker. There he raped her and killed her.

A forensic examination concluded that the cause of death was suffocation.

“The body had many broken ribs and facial bones, as well as multiple injuries to both arms,” Papathanasiou said.

According to the authorities, the suspect was also charged with a crime involving a weapon; according to their data, he acted alone.

Eaton, who was born in Oakland, California, was the wife of British scientist Tony Hyman and the mother of two sons, Max and Luke. She worked as a molecular biologist at the Max Planck Institute in Dresden (Germany).
