Uber launched unmanned taxi in San Francisco

The Uber passenger service company began to use unmanned vehicles in San Francisco, California from December 14.

Unlike the prototype based on Ford Fusion, which Uber had previously used in Pittsburgh, unmanned vehicles based on Volvo XC90 will be used in San Francisco, reports Daily Mail.

To call an unmanned vehicle based on Volvo XC90, service users can use the standard Uber application, and with a regular order, the client will have a chance to get on the unmanned taxi. The cost of travel by unmanned taxi will be standard.

For trips in autopilot mode, certain routes have been chosen for which the most detailed maps have been drawn up and on which comprehensive tests of self-driving machines have already been completed.

At the first stage of implementation, only a few unmanned vehicles will be used, and the trips will be with some restrictions - passengers will be able to sit only in the back seats of the car, and the entire trip will be recorded on video. Behind the wheel to comply with the official requirements of the existing rules, there will be a test driver ready to take control of the car, and an engineer with a laptop in the front passenger seat responsible for collecting statistics during the trip.

During the test trips of December 13 there were a few nuances: for example, the car ordered to the restaurant parked not on the side of the road, but in the middle of the road; in another situation, the car got stuck in traffic on one of the lines of traffic, although the neighboring one was free, and the driver had to redirect the car to another line.

Uber has agreed with Volvo to acquire 100 XC90 crossovers, which have been used by the automaker as a platform for unmanned vehicles for some time. Machines are tested in different countries, including Australia, UK, China and Sweden.
