Chinese doctors infected with COVID-19 darkened skin: what’s the reason
Two Chinese doctors who contracted the coronavirus while treating patients in the epicenter of the pandemic, the city of Wuhan, survived the dangerous disease, but their skin became very dark after they were placed on life support, writes New York Post.
Dr. Yi Fan and Dr. Hu Weifeng, both 42 years old, fell ill with COVID-19 as early as January 18, while working in Wuhan Central Hospital.
Severely ill doctors were taken to the Wuhan hospital specializing in pulmonary diseases, and then they were twice transferred to other medical facilities.
According to Chinese state media reports, the changed skin color of these two men was caused by hormonal imbalance after liver damage.
But one doctor suspected that their skin darkened due to a certain medication that they received at the beginning of treatment.
Yi Fan, a cardiologist, was connected to the ECMO life support apparatus (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) for 39 days.

A device similar to a heart and lung bypass device used during open heart surgery pumps and oxygenates the patient’s blood outside his body.
“When I first regained consciousness, I was scared, especially after learning about my condition. I often had nightmares,” Yi said from his hospital.
Hu, a urologist, was bedridden for 99 days and is still very weak after undergoing ECMO therapy from February 7 to March 22, according to his doctor Li Shusheng.
On April 11, he only regained his ability to speak, Lee said, adding that normal skin color is expected to return when liver function improves.
Yi and Hu worked with Dr. Li Wenliang, who was punished for being the first in the world to sound the alarm about coronavirus. He died on February 7 from COVID-19.
Both men receive psychological support due to their traumatic experience.
