Two warships collided off the east coast of the United States

Two ships of the US Navy collided while resupplying off the east coast of the country.

According to News.Ru, the ships acted together with the carrier-based strike group led by the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, the command of the US Navy will investigate the incident.

According to the press service, it was a “minor incident” - the missile cruiser Leyte Gulf and the bulk carrier Robert E. Peary collided with their sterns. As a result of the incident, no one was injured, the ships were able to continue sailing. A damage assessment will be made after they return to their home port.

A similar incident occurred in June 2017 of the year in 20 kilometers from Cape Irodzaki in the south of the Japanese Izu Peninsula. US destroyer Fitzgerald collided with ACX Crystal, a Philippine container ship. As a result of the accident, seven seamen were killed, three more were injured.

The US Navy command then said that the collision was caused by “inadequate leadership” of the ship on the part of the destroyer captain, his first officer and another senior officer. A similar incident occurred on August 21, 2017, when the destroyer John McCain collided with the Liberian tanker Alnic MC while entering the port of Singapore. Ten sailors died then.

Later it became known that the captains of both American destroyers were officially accused of unintentional murder. In addition, the commander of the Seventh Fleet of the US Navy, Vice Admiral Joseph Okoin, lost his post due to accidents. Also in September of 2017, the commander of the US Navy Pacific Fleet, Admiral Scott Swift, announced his intention to resign due to a lack of career prospects amid accidents with destroyers.
