The US admitted to possessing space weapons, a warning to China and Russia.

The official announcement of the deployment of space weapons comes after years of warnings that China and Russia are practicing offensive actions in space, writes The Washington Post.

The United States now possesses orbital space weapons and will use them to defend American forces. This was announced by US Air Force Secretary Troy Meinke on September 14, effectively acting as a warning to China and Russia.

This is the first time the US has publicly acknowledged having offensive capabilities in space after years of allegations that China and Russia have conducted offensive activities in orbit, such as using lasers or jamming systems that threaten American satellites.

Speaking at the annual Aviation, Space, and Cybersecurity Conference at National Harbor, Maryland, Meinck did not specify what weapons were currently in orbit, but he implied that they were designed for "space control." One U.S. official, speaking to The Washington Post on condition of anonymity, said this could include military action to destroy an enemy satellite if it was being used to target U.S. forces or satellites with weapons.

In addition, the United States is developing a network of space rockets that are being considered as part of a future missile defense system called the Golden Dome.

Meinck didn't explain why the announcement of the new US capability was made now, merely stating, "Many factors influence how we talk about these things."

"This is important from a deterrence perspective," he added, noting that the new weapon is designed to protect American forces from "hostile enemy action."
