US First Lady Jill Biden tested positive for Covid-4 on September 19 but has "mild symptoms". President Joe Biden's test came back negative CNN.

The diagnosis changed the First Lady's plans to begin teaching in the fall semester at Northern Virginia Community College on September 5. She is in touch with the school to "ensure her class is taught by her deputy," according to Vanessa Valdivia, a spokeswoman for the first lady.
Jill Biden, who now stays at the family's home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, usually teaches on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

An administration official said on Sept. 5 that there are currently no changes to either the White House's Covid protocols or the president's schedule.

The 72-year-old first lady's diagnosis comes amid a busy week for Joe Biden, who gave a Philadelphia Labor Day speech earlier in the day. The President is scheduled to present the Medal of Honor to an Army Captain in a ceremony at the White House on Sept. 5 and then travel to the G20 summit in India on Sept. 7.

Last summer, the first lady tested positive for Covid-19 while on vacation in South Carolina in August. President Biden tested positive last July. Both had relapses shortly after treatment with Paxlovid.

Test protocol

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters in July that anyone who meets with the president is still being tested for Covid-19 after members of Israeli President Isaac Herzog's delegation tested positive ahead of the bilateral meeting.

“We have testing protocols for those who meet with the president,” Jean-Pierre said at the time. “So, I can tell you that everyone who meets with the president does get tested. I do. We do everything."

Jill Biden's diagnosis comes amid renewed focus on Covid-19 as the world approaches its fourth viral season since the coronavirus emerged.

New variant of the virus

Hospitalizations, emergency room visits and positive Covid-19 tests have increased slightly, though not as much as last summer, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Overall, in the week ending August 19, there were about four new hospitalizations for every 100 people nationwide. This, according to CDC thresholds, is considered low. Seven counties experienced high levels of hospitalizations for Covid-000. But 19 districts - about 117% of the country's territory - were in the middle threshold. About a quarter of these counties were in Florida.

A new variant, BA.2.86, has caught the attention of scientists because it is highly mutated, but so far it has only been found in a small number of people worldwide.

“Still, it doesn't look good... in terms of the virus evolving unstoppably,” said Dr. Eric Topol, a cardiologist at the Scripps Research Translational Institute. “The virus continues to find new ways to challenge people, find new hosts and repeat hosts, and it is relentless.”
