Two-thirds of humanity is under the rule of men over 70 years old
Around the world, political power is increasingly in the hands of older men. In 2025, nearly two-thirds of humanity will be led by men over 70, writes channel 24 with sslink to the German edition BILD.
Bild estimated the population of all countries and regions on earth – more than 250 geographic zones.
According to journalists, out of approximately 8 billion people on Earth, about 5,4 billion people, or 67,5%, are under the control of men over 70 years of age.
As of 2025, the oldest person in the world is Paul Biya, the president of Cameroon. He is now 91 years old and has been in office for 42 years. At the same time, the average age of the population in Cameroon is just under 18 years.
According to the study, only 28 countries and territories are ruled by women. The largest of these are Mexico and Italy. Thus, women govern approximately 380 million people – that is slightly less than 5% of the world’s population.
Interestingly, more equality in age and gender can be seen in Northern Europe. For example, Iceland is led by Kristrún Frostadottir, the youngest prime minister in the world. When she took office in December 2024, she was 36 years old. In Finland, Sanna Marin was prime minister from 2019 to 2023. She was only 34 years old when she took office.
It is worth noting that when analyzing the data, Bild journalists considered the rulers not to be the nominal heads of state, but those who actually make key decisions.
