A tourist died on the trail in the Grand Canyon: this is the second such case in 2 months

A hiker was found dead on a trail in the Grand Canyon. This is the second incident in the last two months in the national park. Officials identified the victim as James Handshey, a 65-year-old man from Oracle, Arizona. The publication told in more detail Yahoo!.

The Bright Angel Trail is one of several trails in the Grand Canyon that have become popular routes for visitors. It leads hikers from the top of the South Rim Trail down to the Colorado River, which flows along the canyon floor. The distance from the trail to the river is just under eight miles (12,8 km) and the elevation change is about 4460 feet (1,3 km). The trail passes through the Havasupai Gardens Recreation Area, located less than five miles (8 km) from the trailhead.

The distress call came from a location on the Bright Angel Trail about 1,5 miles (2,4 kilometers) from Havasupai Gardens, the park service said, noting that a rescue worker at the campground immediately responded to the call. Another park service search and rescue team flew in by helicopter and pronounced Hendsha dead upon arrival at the scene.

The National Park Service is working with the Coconino County Medical Examiner to investigate the incident.

Handsha's death was at least the tenth this year at Grand Canyon National Park. Four deaths in the park this year have been related to hiking, three of which occurred on the Bright Angel Trail.

Handsha's death comes just two months after a 55-year-old Virginia man died in mid-September while trying to walk 21 miles (33,7 km) of the Grand Canyon in one day. Then authorities reported that the tourist was found dead on the trail leading from the South to the North Canyon.

Also earlier this year, a 36-year-old Indiana woman died while attempting the same hike as Handshi. She was found unconscious near the Three-Mile Resthouse on the Bright Angel Trail, officials said. In July, a 57-year-old woman attempting to complete an eight-mile (12,8 km) hike died when temperatures at the Grand Canyon topped 37 Celsius.
