Trump has trademarked his name to rename Palm Beach Airport.

President Donald Trump's lawyers have filed trademark applications for "Donald J. Trump International Airport." Florida lawmakers are already prepared to rename the Palm Beach airport Trump International Airport, according to USA Today.

New documents filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, which is under Trump's control, show that lawyers have also filed trademark applications for "President Donald J. Trump International Airport" and "DJT" — an abbreviation of the president's initials.

Typically, owning a trademark allows you to license its use for a fee, but Trump's trademark attorney said that's not the case here. According to Michael Santuzzi of the Fort Lauderdale-based law firm 500Law, the president is protecting his legal rights to prevent bad actors from abusing what he called "the most frequently infringed trademark in the world."

Santuzzi said the president was deeply honored by the anticipated renaming of Palm Beach International Airport. This initiative has already received initial approval from relevant legislative committees, but has not yet been enacted into law.

"I want to emphasize: neither the President nor any members of his family will receive any royalties, licensing fees, or any financial reward whatsoever in connection with the proposed airport renaming," Santuzzi wrote. "The Trump Organization has always been willing to provide this right to the county in which his hometown is located, at no cost."

The president regularly spends weekends at his Mar-a-Lago golf club after arriving on Air Force One at Palm Beach International Airport.

Trump likes to name objects after himself.

At the same time, he emphasizes that his name is a powerful, internationally recognizable brand—from golf resorts and casinos to steaks and a university. His name was also added to the wall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, which the administration now calls the Trump-Kennedy Center.

One naming expert has called Trump a "toponymic president," referring to how often he names things after himself to distinguish himself and how he uses other renamings, such as changing the Gulf of Mexico to "American," to cement his place in history.

According to a USA TODAY review of the documents, the new trademark applications cover not only the airport's operations, but also the use of the name on collectible coins, watches, ties, and even airport lounges.

"The proposed renaming of Palm Beach International Airport is consistent with our nation's longstanding tradition of naming airports after U.S. presidents and other Americans who have made significant contributions to our nation," Santuzzi said.

Congress is also considering a proposal to rename Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C., to "Donald J. Trump International Airport." While rare, cases of two airports sharing the same name are not uncommon: three airports are named after Pope John Paul II internationally—in Poland, Italy, and Portugal.

The initiative to rename Palm Beach Airport comes amid Trump's claims that labor union representatives and unnamed politicians had also proposed renaming New York's Pennsylvania Station in his honor. Trump himself has not directly commented on the possible renaming of Palm Beach Airport, but in a social media post on February 16, he stated that he had not proposed renaming Pennsylvania Station.
