Time to Name Trump Person of 2024: This Will Be the Politician's Second Victory in This Rating
Time is set to recognize the president-elect as the person who, for better or worse, has the greatest influence on world politics on December 12, naming him Person of the Year. To celebrate the magazine's cover presentation, Trump will ring the bell at the opening of the New York Stock Exchange, reports CNN.
Donald Trump once publicly suggested that Time would never name him its Person of the Year. But today marks the second time he has been honored.
So, in 2016, Time named him “Person of the Year” after his unexpected ascension to the presidency. This time, Trump’s triumphant return played a role, capable of upending modern American politics.
Here's what the politician said about this to Today:
Despite the magazine’s dwindling circulation, Time’s Person of the Year status remains an annual cultural touchstone. Winning it has become something of an obsession for Trump, one that has dogged the politician for years. As The Washington Post reported, a fake Time cover naming him the 2009 Person of the Year hung at several of Trump’s golf clubs.

There is an interesting story behind this cover. In 2009, Time magazine named Person of the Year to Ben Bernanke, then Chairman of the US Federal Reserve. Bernanke was chosen for his role in overcoming the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis.
Donald Trump in 2009 was known as a businessman and media personality, mostly involved in real estate, and as the host of the reality show The Apprentice. At the time, his activities did not have the scale of influence to compete with figures actively involved in solving global problems. And, of course, Time magazine did not put a photo of Donald Trump on the cover in 2009. However, fake framed covers were spotted at some of his golf clubs.
One, dated March 1, 2009, featured a portrait of Trump with a headline praising his achievements: "Trump: The 'Apprentice' is a television smash!" But experts noticed several discrepancies that gave away the fake. In particular, the magazine's logo was inaccurately reproduced. The font style and text format did not meet Time standards. The date on the cover did not match the actual issues.
The fake covers were likely custom-made. When The Washington Post broke the story in 2017, golf clubs began removing them from their walls. Trump and his representatives have not publicly commented on who commissioned the covers.
Trump has regularly spoken out on Twitter about the annual selection, each time suggesting that he should take the place of Person of the Year.
In 2011, the politician criticized the magazine for choosing a "protester" as a nod to the revolutions flaring up in the Arab world and the Occupy movement in the United States. The "protester" on the cover was an illustration of a man with his face covered, symbolizing the universality and anonymity of protest movements.
A year later, Trump said Time had “lost all credibility” for not including him personally in its list of the 100 most influential people of the year. The 45th president privately complained about the editorial choice when Taylor Swift won in 2023. He held a grudge, even writing on social media, “I hate Taylor Swift,” after the pop star endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.
In 2015, when the magazine named then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel its Person of the Year, Trump tweeted, "I told you @TIME Magazine would never pick me as Person of the Year, when in fact I'm the favorite," then added, "They picked the guy who's destroying Germany."
Even after Trump became Person of the Year, he continued to keep a jealous eye on those who received the title after him.
In 2017, Trump said he was again in contention for the nomination but lost because he refused to be interviewed and photographed. Time disputed his version of events.
Despite the media criticism, Trump regularly cooperates with the press. In April, he gave Time magazine an extensive interview at his Palm Beach club. Harris declined a similar opportunity, the magazine's owner said in October.

Over the decades, the Person of the Year title has been bestowed on a wide range of figures, from heads of state and activists to entrepreneurs and, in some cases, brutal authoritarians. Every U.S. president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt, with the exception of Gerald Ford, has been named Person of the Year at least once. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were both Person of the Year after they defeated Trump in 2020.
Members of Trump's family, including his daughter Ivanka, are expected to attend the event on Dec. 12. It will be one of the few public appearances by the president-elect's daughter, who served as his senior adviser during his first term.
