For the first time in history, the signature of a sitting US president will appear on national currency. The new bills will also feature the signature of US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The new bills are expected to enter circulation soon—their release is timed to coincide with the country's 250th anniversary, writes Daily Mail.

The portrait of Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, will remain, and the overall design will remain virtually unchanged, with the exception of two signatures added to the lower left corner.

Bessent supported the initiative, saying that issuing such a currency for the anniversary of US independence was “entirely appropriate.”

The Treasury Secretary wrote in X: “Under President Trump’s leadership, we are moving toward unprecedented economic growth, long-term dollar dominance, and fiscal resilience.”

"There is no more visible way to commemorate the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald Trump than by issuing dollar bills bearing his signature, and it is fitting that this historic currency is being issued in the year of the United States' 250th anniversary," he said.

The caption echoes a point Bessent first made in March, when the plan to add the caption was first announced.

US Treasurer Brandon Beach also supported the decision.

"The president's contribution to history as the architect of the economic revival known as America's 'Golden Age' is undeniable," he said. "His signature on American currency is not only appropriate but also well-deserved recognition."

The exact timing of when the new $100 bills will be in circulation has not yet been announced, but it typically takes several weeks between printing at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and their distribution through the Federal Reserve System.

This isn't the first initiative involving the current president's image on currency. Bessent previously supported the idea of ​​placing Trump's portrait on the new $250 bill.

In May, the head of the Department of Finance publicly called such an initiative "appropriate" in the context of the country's approaching 250th anniversary.

"I think it's appropriate. President Trump is taking office during a milestone year—the 250th anniversary of the United States," Bessent said on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures."

The idea could only be realized if Congress amended a 159-year-old federal law that prohibits the depiction of living people on American banknotes.

At a briefing, Bessent said the Treasury Department had already prepared for the possible release of a $250 bill, but was awaiting legislative approval.

"It all depends on Capitol Hill. At the Treasury Department, we're preparing for these things in advance. We've prepared in case the law is passed, but we'll act strictly within the framework of current legislation," he concluded.

In an interview with Fox News, Bessent cited historical precedent, recalling that a commemorative coin was issued during the presidency of Calvin Coolidge.

"Calvin Coolidge was president during the 150th anniversary of the United States. A coin was issued in his honor," the official recalled. "And I think this is a wonderful way to celebrate the achievements of a great president."
