Trump is pushing a new bill that would bar future presidents from 'reopening the border'
President Donald Trump announced he is proposing new legislation that would prevent future presidents from relaxing immigration controls at the US border. He made this announcement during his address at the Republican National Convention ahead of the midterm elections, according to New York Post.
Trump unveiled the "Prevent Our Country from Being Invaded" bill at the American Airlines Center in Dallas on September 9. It's one of a series of new policies the president plans to introduce ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
"We will make sure that, from a legal standpoint, no future president, having the power to reopen the border, will be able to destroy our country," he said.
On the subject: In 2025, a record low number of migrants crossed the US southern border illegally.
It remains unclear whether Congress will have time to consider the bill before the midterm elections on November 3. Several key bills promoted by the president, including the Republican voter ID initiative, have still failed to pass both chambers of Congress.
Comprehensive immigration reform has failed to pass either the House or the Senate since the 1990s.
At one point, 46th President Joe Biden signed executive orders reversing the immigration policies of Trump's first term. Upon his return to the White House in January 2025, these decisions were, in turn, reversed.
Among the measures Biden reversed were decisions to declare a national emergency at the southern border and to institute procedures to quickly detain and deport migrants who entered the United States illegally.
Republicans have sharply criticized Biden's "catch and release" policy, which has seen asylum seekers released into the United States before their immigration cases are processed.
Under the 46th president, more than 8 million migrants entered the United States.
Trump's portrayals of chaos at the southern border and brutal crimes committed by people who entered the country during Biden's presidency helped propel Trump back to the White House in the 2024 campaign.
Since then, the number of daily border apprehensions has dropped by more than 90%, and not a single detained migrant has been released within the country.
The first bill Trump signed after returning to the White House as the 47th president was the Laken Riley Act. It was named after Laken Riley, a medical student from Georgia who was murdered by a Venezuelan citizen who had illegally entered the United States.
The law requires federal authorities to detain immigrants charged with burglary, theft, assault on law enforcement officers, or violent crimes. This closed the loophole that allowed Riley's killer to evade capture.

Furthermore, last year, Republicans in Congress secured tens of billions of dollars through the Budget Reconciliation Act. These funds are earmarked for construction of new sections of the border wall and funding for additional federal immigration enforcement measures.
