Trump Proposes Making Canada the 51st US State

Donald Trump responded to Justin Trudeau's remark by proposing that Canada become the 51st state of the United States. Last week, Trudeau made a surprise visit to Mar-a-Lago to discuss Trump's threat to impose 25 percent tariffs on Canadian goods. The tariffs were part of Trump's demands to curb illegal immigration and drug trafficking across the U.S. border with Canada and Mexico.

During the three-hour conversation, Trump directly accused Canada of failing to control the flow of people and drugs across the border and of creating a huge trade deficit, which he said exceeds $100 billion.

When Trudeau noted that such tariffs would destroy Canada's economy, Trump sarcastically suggested that Canada become the 51st state of the United States, saying that Trudeau could keep the title of "governor." The exchange was laughable, though the conversation included serious demands.

Despite the tense moments, the discussions ended positively, according to Canadian officials. Official comments from Trump and Trudeau have not yet been received.
