Trump intends to issue green cards to categories of migrants who previously did not receive them
45th President Donald Trump said in an interview published June 20 that he plans to automatically grant green cards to foreign students who graduate from colleges in the United States. This statement stands in stark contrast to his usual anti-immigrant rhetoric, writes Voice of America.
Trump was asked on the All-In business and investment podcast about plans to attract the “best and brightest” to business.
“In my opinion, if you graduate from college, you should automatically receive a green card as part of your degree in order to be able to stay in this country. And this applies not only to high school, but to any college,” he said and promised to resolve this issue on the first day of his presidency if he is elected in November.
Immigration has become a major theme of Trump's campaign to return to the White House in 2024. His proposal to provide green cards (documents that provide a path to U.S. citizenship) to potentially hundreds of thousands of foreign graduates would greatly expand America's immigration system.
Trump's remarks contrast sharply with his usual statements about migrants. He often said at his rallies that illegal immigrants threaten public safety and take away government jobs and resources. The 45th President once said that they generally “poison the blood of our country.” Trump has promised, if elected, to carry out the largest deportation operation in US history.

Trump and his supporters often claim to know the difference between illegal and legal immigrants. But during his presidency, he proposed restrictions on legal immigration, particularly on programs such as family-based visas and the visa lottery.
Immediately after taking office in 2017, Trump signed the “Buy American, Hire American” executive order, inviting cabinet members to introduce new rules for issuing business visas. They were supposed to be issued only to the highest paid or qualified candidates to protect the American labor market.
The 45th president criticized the H1-B program, often used by companies to temporarily hire foreign workers. In particular, because they hired foreigners for less pay than Americans.
In a conversation with All-In, Trump admitted that the coronavirus pandemic prevented the implementation of these plans. He cited examples of graduates from the most prestigious colleges who wanted to stay in the United States but were unable to obtain visas. Therefore, they had to return to their homeland (Trump mentioned citizens of India and China).
“You need a pool of people to work in your company,” Trump noted, addressing entrepreneurs. “And these must be very smart people.”

In a statement released hours after the podcast aired, Trump presidential campaign spokeswoman Caroline Levitt said: “President Trump has proposed the most rigorous vetting process for potential migrants in U.S. history. The goal is to exclude all communists, radical Islamists, Hamas supporters, America haters and dependents."
In his opinion, only after such verification should we allow the most qualified graduates who can make a significant contribution to the development of America to remain.
