Trump promises not to tax overtime wages

“Your overtime will not be taxed,” US presidential candidate Donald Trump said at a campaign rally in Tucson, Arizona, on September 12. He promised to end taxation of Social Security benefits and tips for service workers, reports Fox News.

Trump promises to eliminate taxes on overtime pay as part of a series of proposed tax breaks that he says will mean more income for workers.

"It gives people more incentive to work. It's good for businesses," Trump said Sept. 12. "The people who work overtime are some of the hardest working people in our country. And for too long, no one in Washington has cared about them. They're the police officers, the nurses, the factory workers, the construction workers, the truck drivers and the machine operators."

The promises were made at a rally in the state that President Biden won by just a few thousand votes in 2020. Trump now wants to turn Arizona into a red (Republican) state.

"That's why we will say that if you work overtime, more than 40 hours a week, then those overtime hours will not be taxable."

Trump has promised, among other things, to get rid of taxes on Social Security benefits and tips for service workers. (Vice President Kamala Harris has made a similar promise regarding tips.) Trump has also promised to raise the minimum wage.

The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimates that eliminating taxes on tip income and raising the minimum wage could add $100 billion to $200 billion to the nation's budget deficit over a 10-year period.
