It is unclear what exactly prompted Trump's dramatic statement in Truth Social and his early return from Canada. Israel has been striking Tehran since June 12, but the US has so far refused to join in.
White House press secretary Alex Pfeiffer denied reports that the US was striking Iran: "American forces remain in a defensive posture, and that has not changed. We will defend American interests."

Trump eventually told reporters before flying out of Canada: "They [Iran] want to make a deal, and as soon as I leave here, we'll do something. But I have to leave here."
Tehran has a population of 10 million people, and the metropolitan area has a population of approximately 17 million.
"Iran should have signed the 'deal' I told them about. What a disgrace and waste of human life! Let me say it simply: IRAN CANNOT HAVE NUCLEAR WEAPONS. I will say it again and again! Everyone should evacuate Tehran immediately!" the 47th US President wrote.
He then posted a rebuke to "weirdo Tucker Carlson," noting that he doesn't understand one thing: "IRAN CANNOT HAVE NUCLEAR WEAPONS."
In a subsequent post, Trump wrote: "AMERICA FIRST means many GREAT things, including making sure IRAN CANNOT HAVE NUCLEAR WEAPONS. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!"
The Israeli military has said it has full control of the airspace over Tehran. On June 16, its forces signaled that they were expanding their target list beyond purely military or nuclear sites. They intend to bomb Iranian state television.
Israel has issued several evacuation orders for civilians in Tehran, from areas where hundreds of thousands of people live, including one that targeted the site of Iran's state television headquarters.
How many civilians managed to evacuate and whether such a mass exodus in such a short time is even possible is still an open question.
Less than two hours before Truth Social's publication, Trump said at the G7 summit in Canada that the US was in telephone talks with the Iranians, and even suggested that "an in-person meeting would be better."
The head of the White House still hopes that Iran will conclude an agreement.
"In my opinion, the deal will happen. It would be very stupid for Iran not to sign it," he said.
French President Emmanuel Macron told other G7 leaders that the US was involved in ceasefire talks between Israel and Iran and offered to meet with the Iranians.
Leaving the G7 summit early, Trump skips meetings with leaders of states, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
"Much has been accomplished, but because of what's happening in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with heads of state," said spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt.
Meanwhile, the USS Nimitz carrier strike group is heading to the Middle East ahead of schedule, according to news reports.
The Chinese embassy has called on its citizens to urgently leave Israel via the land border with Jordan.
Explosions are heard in southern Iran and the Persian Gulf coast. According to Iran International, Ahvaz, Bushehr, Dezful, Bandar Abbas are under attack.
