Trump has been slower than any modern president to allocate aid for disaster victims.

After major natural disasters, Americans have to wait weeks or even months for the president to approve aid, according to Independent.

Under Donald Trump, residents affected by hurricanes, floods, and wildfires are receiving federal aid much more slowly than under previous administrations. An Associated Press analysis of data shows that states that did not vote for him are experiencing the highest rates of aid denials.

Since returning to the White House last year, Trump has approved about 65 major disaster declarations but rejected more than two dozen requests from states, tribal areas and other jurisdictions seeking federal aid after storms, tornadoes, floods and fires.

An analysis of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) data dating back to 1989 found that, on average, Trump takes longer to decide on such requests than other modern presidents. Furthermore, the approval gap between "home" and "out" states was wider than under any other administration.

About 80% of Republican governors' requests are approved, while the figure for Democratic governors is about 60%. Looking at the 2024 election map, more than three-quarters of applications from states Trump won were approved, while less than half were from states he lost.

The White House rejects suggestions that aid allocation decisions are politically motivated. Administration spokesperson Abigail Jackson stated that aid decisions are "not politicized" and emphasized that authorities are conducting more thorough due diligence to ensure taxpayer funds are spent for their intended purposes.

However, delays threaten to leave affected families waiting months for assistance with temporary housing, home repairs, and other recovery costs. Meanwhile, local authorities remain uncertain about compensation for recovery work.

One recent denial involved applications from Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island following the February snowstorm. Rhode Island's Democratic congressional delegation called it "part of a pattern of extreme partisanship" and asserted that disaster relief should be driven by needs, not politics.

According to the Associated Press, it currently takes Trump about six weeks on average to approve a request after it reaches the White House. Given that states themselves often spend weeks assessing damage before submitting applications, victims often wait more than two months before assistance is approved.

By comparison, during his first term, Trump made such decisions within approximately three weeks—almost the same as 46th President Joe Biden. Under Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George H.W. Bush, the average time was less than two weeks.

The findings come as the Trump administration considers sweeping changes to FEMA's operations, shifting more of the cost of disaster relief to states and reducing the federal government's role in responding to major disasters.
