Trump has chosen his successor for the 2028 presidential election.

According to sources, Donald Trump has chosen the person he would like to pass the MAGA movement's torch to after his departure. The US president is hoping to be succeeded by Vice President J.D. Vance, writes The New Republic.

According to Axios, Trump is pleased with how Vance handles his duties, from television appearances to public statements. In conversations with his inner circle, the president increasingly speaks positively of the former Ohio senator, to the detriment of another potential successor, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

"The president no longer asks, 'J.D. or Marco?'" a source told the publication, requesting anonymity. "He no longer asks, 'How is J.D. doing?' He now says, 'J.D. looks great, doesn't he?'"

One of Trump's senior advisers told Axios that "J.D. really deserves it, and Trump sees that," adding that Rubio "wasn't going to run in 2028 anyway, and now it's even less likely."

One of the key moments that cemented Trump's positive attitude toward Vance was his work with Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff on the memorandum of understanding with Iran, which led to a temporary détente. Vance received significant media attention for his role in these negotiations and, at the same time, began a series of public appearances to promote his new book, "Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith."

In total, Vance appeared on television 33 times, which impressed Trump, who places great importance on the television format. Although Trump himself dislikes many of the programs on which Vance appeared, particularly ABC's The View, he was impressed by the videos of these appearances, which were widely distributed in the media.

Vance has raised $70 million for the Republican National Committee and is expected to rely on that organization if he runs for president. Despite this, he remains unpopular with the general American public—roughly as unpopular as Trump himself. But within the Republican Party, his approval rating is almost on par with the president's: 62% approval, compared to Trump's 65%. Early polls for the 2028 election also show him leading Republicans both nationally and in key states, including New Hampshire.

However, in recent months, some conservatives who support Israel have become disillusioned with Vance after his criticism of the Israeli leadership for condemning the Iran memorandum. On July 4, David McIntosh, head of the conservative business organization Club for Growth, wrote in X that Vance doesn't understand the importance of free markets.

Even if Vance manages to overcome these challenges and secure the Republican nomination in 2028, his path to the White House remains challenging. His book received lukewarm reviews and a lukewarm critical reception, and Trump himself, according to observers, has made both Vance and the Republican Party deeply unpopular among non-MAGA voters. As the 2028 election approaches, it will be interesting to see whether Vance will attempt to align himself even more closely with Trump or, conversely, distance himself to improve his own political chances.
