Five more countries have been added to the list of countries whose citizens are banned from entering the United States.

President Donald Trump has expanded the list of countries whose citizens are banned from entering the United States. The White House stated that the restrictions are being introduced "to protect the security of the United States" and will take effect on January 1, according to Air force.

A complete entry ban will now apply to citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan and Syria, as well as holders of Palestinian Authority passports.

The Trump administration also moved Laos and Sierra Leone, which had previously been under partial restrictions, to a full ban and imposed partial restrictions on 15 more countries, including Nigeria, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe.

Trump said the expansion of the ban was necessary because of what the White House administration calls "the failure of foreign vetting and screening systems."

Officials cited high rates of visa overstays, unreliable civil registries, corruption, terrorist activity, and a lack of cooperation in receiving deportees.

The announcement followed the arrest of an Afghan national suspected of shooting two National Guard troops over Thanksgiving weekend. The White House cited the incident as a warning to its security concerns.

This is the third time Trump has imposed a travel ban.

During his first term, he issued a similar decree in 2017, which sparked protests and lawsuits in the United States and abroad.

The White House clarified that the restrictions will remain in place until the affected countries demonstrate "compelling improvements" in identity management, information sharing, and cooperation with U.S. immigration authorities.

A number of exceptions are provided: the ban will not apply to legal permanent residents, individuals already holding visas, diplomats, or athletes arriving to participate in major sporting events. Officials stated that individual permits will be granted in cases where travel can be deemed to be in the national interest.

• Persons travelling on travel documents issued or endorsed by the Palestinian Authority are also subject to a complete entry ban.
