The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) recently ordered a suspension of processing of applications for lawful permanent residence filed by immigrants who have been granted asylum. or refugee status, according to sources who asked to remain anonymous because the move had not been officially announced.
The decision will, at least for now, leave immigrants who were granted asylum in the United States after proving a risk of persecution in their home countries in legal limbo.

Refugees are granted entry into the United States after a lengthy process that typically takes years. It includes security checks, medical examinations, and interviews. Asylees are foreigners in the United States who have been granted protection by immigration judges or asylum officers. Both categories must prove that they face persecution because of their political views, race, or religion.
The Trump administration has targeted both of these statutory mechanisms, suspending refugee admissions and shutting down the asylum system at the U.S.-Mexico border through orders that are currently being challenged in federal court.
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that the pause in green card processing is necessary to comply with two executive orders from President Trump, including one that challenges immigration vetting procedures in place under the Biden administration.
“USCIS, consistent with Trump’s executive order, is temporarily suspending the completion of certain adjustment of status applications pending additional review to determine whether there is a risk to public safety, security, or fraud,” the Department of Homeland Security said.
In one executive order cited by officials, Trump directed federal agencies to “use the utmost rigor to screen all aliens seeking admission, entry, or already present in the United States.”
Another order gave the State Department the power to designate Mexican cartels and other Latin American criminal organizations, such as Tren de Aragua, as foreign terrorist organizations.
The suspension of some green card applications is the latest move by the Trump administration to restrict, tighten and, in some cases, halt legal immigration processes on national security and fraud-fighting grounds.
Last month, the administration suspended all immigration applications filed by migrants from Latin America and Ukraine who came to the United States under two Biden-era programs based on a mechanism called “humanitarian parole.”
Last week, the administration said more than half a million migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela who came to the U.S. under one of the programs would be given 30 days to leave voluntarily or face arrest and deportation. Trump administration officials said the migrants had been “shallowly vetted” under Biden and that the program had been plagued with fraud.

Trump administration officials have announced plans, among other things, to more thoroughly vet and review social media accounts of immigrants applying for legal status, including U.S. citizenship, green cards, and asylum. USCIS said the social media account reviews are necessary for “enhanced identity verification, due diligence, and national security purposes.”
The agency has previously reviewed social media accounts of immigrants applying for certain immigration benefits. Under the new plan, applicants will now have to provide the government with information about their social media accounts for verification.
