Three dead and dozens injured: a snow flurry in Pennsylvania led to an accident of 50 cars

At least 3 people were killed and 20 injured in Pennsylvania snow squalls that led to a 50 to 60-vehicle crash on Highway 81. Writes about it USA Today.

Schuylkill County Coroner Dr. David Moylan warned that the death toll "could rise" as a search of the scene has not yet been completed due to burning vehicles.

The accident happened on Highway 81 around 10:30 am, John Bleakley of the county's emergency management department said. According to him, at least 20 people were hospitalized with injuries.

According to Ronald Young, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, all lanes of Highway 81 north in Schuylkill County were closed as a result of the collision.

Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the accident and numerous local ambulance, fire and police services have arrived on the scene, police lieutenant Adam Reed said. Several tanker trucks were on site to replenish water supplies as there was no source of water from hydrants.

According to Bleakley, the snowy conditions made it difficult for services to reach the scene. Some people are stuck in their cars. According to him, three tractor trailers caught fire and there were at least two more small fires.

A video posted to social media shows several tractor-trailers and other vehicles crashing into other stopped vehicles.

Bleakley said he expects sections of the highway to be closed until Tuesday, March 29, until police can complete their investigation and allow vehicles to move. He said more snow squalls are expected in the afternoon.

The office of the National Weather Service issued a snow squall warning for central Pennsylvania and advised drivers to remain vigilant.

“Squalls will quickly reduce visibility to half a mile and cover roads in snow,” forecasters said, urging drivers to pull off the road if possible or turn on their hazard warning lights “and gradually slow down to avoid collisions.”
