Cracks in the construction of the bridge in Miami noticed two days before its collapse
One of the engineers who worked on the construction of a pedestrian bridge in the city of Miami, Florida, two days before collapse of this construction noticed cracks on it and notified the authorities. This is evidenced by a transcript of the voice message left on the answering machine, published on Friday by the State Transportation Authority, writes TASS.
The bridge across the seven-lane highway in question was not fully completed. Its main section, weighing about 950 tons, was installed over the weekend. The facility was erected primarily for students at Florida International University, who had to cross the freeway to quickly get to campus. The construction collapsed on Thursday, there were several cars under the rubble, at least six people were killed and ten were injured.
On Tuesday, two days before the incident, engineer Denny Payt, who was involved in the construction, called one of the Florida Transportation Authority staff and left a message on the answering machine that cracks were noticed in the design. He noted that the bridge was supposedly in need of repair, and offered to discuss this in more detail later. The addressee was absent from the workplace and listened to the recording only on Friday, after the bridge collapsed.
The management statement stresses that its representatives did not receive timely information from builders about the existence of a threat to human life in this case. The document emphasizes that those who were responsible for the construction of the object should have noticed the signs of possible danger.
