Trump: Crimean residents want to be with Russia, not with Ukraine
US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump believes that the majority of Crimean residents have opted for Russia, and the United States must reckon with this.
He stated this in an interview with the TV channel ABC News.
“If our country can improve relations with Russia, that will be great,” Trump said.
At the same time, he clarified that he has not and never had any relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, never met with him and did not speak.
Answering the clarifying question of a journalist about his readiness to recognize the occupied Crimea as part of the Russian Federation, he once again repeated that he was ready to consider this question.
“The people of Crimea, from what I heard, want to be with Russia rather than where they were. And that should be kept in mind too,” Trump said.
He also added that the current US President Barack Obama’s administration has allowed the conflict in Ukraine.
“This all happened during the Obama administration, with a strong NATO. Therefore, Donald Trump should not be blamed for the fact that Ukraine is in chaos and Crimea was taken,” the politician said.
