Trump first met with Pope Francis

US President Donald Trump 24 May during his visit to the Vatican for the first time met with Pope Francis.
During the meeting, he was accompanied by family members: wife Melanya and daughter Ivanka with husband Jared Kushner, reports with the BBC.
The President of the United States and the pontiff exchanged gifts. Francis presented Trump with a medal with an olive branch, noting that it is a symbol of peace.
Trump gave the Pope a collection of books by Martin Luther King, a fighter for black rights.
Francis also gave Trump his encyclical on the environment, a policy that the US president had decisively abandoned when he rolled back several environmental laws of his predecessor, Barack Obama.
The audience with the pontiff lasted about half an hour and took place behind closed doors. Before the meeting began, Trump and Pope Francis shook hands in front of the cameras. Trump said it was a "great honor" for him to meet the Pope.
Trump and Francis take opposing positions on many global issues. In particular, Francis criticized Trump's campaign promises to build a wall on the border with Mexico. The pontiff also stressed the need to accept and help refugees from Syria and other war-torn countries, as such assistance is a “Christian duty.”
However, Francis and Trump have similar positions on Islamic terrorism. They both called on Muslim leaders to make more efforts to combat terrorism and the activities of the radicals.
From Italy, Trump will travel to Brussels (Belgium) for a NATO summit. Before that, the head of the United States visited Saudi Arabia и Israel.
