Trump announced his intention to move the embassy to Jerusalem
The White House speaker Sarah Sanders confirmed the information about the talks held, but she also did not elaborate, stressing that a number of conversations with foreign leaders are planned. The White House also did not comment on the intentions of Trump, but made it clear that information about the cancellation of the statement has been received.
At the same time, it was reported from Ramallah that Donald Trump informed the head of the Palestinian Authority about his decision to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which will indicate the actual recognition of the city as the capital of the Jewish state.
“Trump informed during the conversation about his readiness to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem,” Abu Mazen told his entourage. He also complained that Palestinian demands had not been taken into account. “With him (Trump), there will be no Palestinian state, there will be no Jerusalem,” Abu Mazen said.
The head of the Palestinian Authority also said that he brought to the attention of Trump the possible consequences of such a step: the complete failure of the peace process, destabilization in the region and around the world.
Abu Mazen has been trying to gain international support over the past few days to block Trump’s decision.
One of the closest advisers to the head of the autonomy, Muhammad al-Habash, made a sharp anti-American statement, warning that the Palestinians would not put up with attempts to deprive them of their right to Jerusalem, and threatened “decisive action.”
Harsh statements about Trump’s intentions were made by the Arab League and Turkish President Erdogan, who threatened to break off relations with Israel if the Americans recognize Jerusalem as its capital.
“Jerusalem is a red line for all Muslims,” the Turkish leader said.
In connection with the expected declaration of Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Knesset deputies of a possible escalation of tension in the event of the announcement of the transfer of the American Embassy to Jerusalem.
On the morning of December 5, it was reported that US President Donald Trump had postponed the date of the decision to move the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. In this regard, it has also been reported that Trump has been under enormous domestic and international pressure in recent days. Some - primarily pro-Israel Republicans and evangelicals - are trying to convince him to announce not only the recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, but also the beginning of the process of moving the American embassy there. Others - primarily sources in the State Department and leaders of Arab countries - are persuading to delay the transfer of the embassy in order to avoid escalation and give a chance to a peaceful resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Recall that December 6 is expected Trump's declaration on recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. This declaration will mark a fundamental change in the policy of the American leadership, which, in the person of both the Democratic presidents and the Republicans, has so far refrained from unequivocal statements and believed that the status of the city should be determined within the framework of the final settlement.
