Trump has threatened to strike Oman if it interferes with his administration's talks with Iran, which is claiming 'victory'.

The US and Oman are holding separate talks with Tehran to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital transport artery for the global economy. It remained largely closed for nearly six months during the US-Iran war.

Earlier that day, Iranian authorities announced they were close to reaching an agreement with Oman. However, the fate of the US-Iran negotiations remains uncertain: the 60-day memorandum of understanding between the parties expired on August 17.

On the subject: Iran demands the withdrawal of US troops and the payment of reparations—only after that will it open the Strait of Hormuz.

Answering reporters' questions in the Oval Office on August 17, Trump, when asked by BBC News whether he would extend the memorandum, said: "No."

Since the US and Israeli strikes against Iran began in February, Tehran has largely closed the Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas flows. Its reopening has become a key issue in the negotiations.

Oman is located on the southern side of the strait and claims neutrality in the conflict. However, the country has suffered several attacks from Iran and is now playing a key role in negotiations with Tehran to restore shipping lanes.

Washington is simultaneously pushing for the opening of the strait. Fox correspondent Trey Yingst quotes Trump as saying, "If Oman gets in our way, we'll bomb them to bits."

However, it is unclear what exactly Trump considers an "obstacle" to his plans to reach an agreement.

In the same Fox interview, Trump claimed that the US has a direct, unofficial channel of communication with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a powerful military, economic, and political force in Iran.

A Corps spokesman denied the statement.

In a comment to the semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim News, he said: "There are no negotiations taking place between representatives of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Americans. These lies of Trump's are merely a figment of his imagination, fueled by delusions and nightmares following the defeat and despair of the war."

Iran declared "victory" in the war

Iran has confirmed claims of "victory" in the war. These claims, in somewhat softened terms, are widely quoted by Western news agencies. Iran's Supreme National Security Council officially stated: "We congratulate the people of Iran on this victory," "The enemy has suffered a historic and crushing defeat in its criminal, illegal, and shameful war against the Iranian nation... Iran has achieved a great victory and forced the United States to accept its 10-point plan," "This campaign has achieved all the goals set before the conflict."
None of the enemy's main objectives were achieved.

This statement is cited in a publication by the Iranian news agency Tasnim News.

Oman reaches agreement with Iran

Trump made his statement about Oman just hours after Iran announced an agreement with it on the passage of ships through the strait.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei told reporters: "An understanding has been reached regarding the transit route."

He added that the parties would finalize the details before issuing a joint statement. Oman had previously described these talks as positive.

Earlier this month, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that a full opening of the strait would only be possible if Iran received compensation from the US for what Tehran considers a violation of the memorandum.

Reuters, citing an Iranian official, previously reported that Tehran is seeking to impose fees of between 5% and 7% of the value of cargo for ships passing through the strait.

Speaking to Fox, Trump noted that he was in no rush to end the war: "They're good poker players, but they're dying. I don't have a time frame. I'm in no rush."

The memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran, signed on June 18, was intended to lead to a ceasefire and at least a partial opening of the Strait of Hormuz. However, it effectively ceased to be effective after both sides resumed attacks.

On July 8, Trump announced that the ceasefire was "over" and lashed out at Iran's leadership, calling them "scum" and "crazy" after new exchanges of strikes.

As the memorandum was about to expire on August 17, Trump wrote on his social media account, Truth Social: “The primary objective, and it will always be, is that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon under any circumstances.”
