Trump proposes to further reduce the number of refugees accepted

The Trump administration on Wednesday proposed to introduce a new quota for the admission of refugees to the USA - no more than 45 thousand people a year. This is the lowest level since 1980 of the year, i.e., for all the time that there is a current system for accepting refugees from other countries.

According to "Voice of America“, citing White House representatives, such a reduction in the limit, along with a system of checking the security of persons admitted, is necessary to ensure the security of the United States. In addition, it is proposed to reduce funding for refugee resettlement programs by 25%.

This proposal was immediately and harshly criticized by many immigration lawyers and refugee advocates. They say that such a measure ignores the fact that humanitarian crises in the world are multiplying.

“The protection and safety of American citizens is our main concern. We are ready to issue as many refugees as possible within this limit, ”a White House official told reporters in a telephone conversation on condition that his anonymity was preserved.

Another US administration official said that she was considering the possibility of introducing a "wide range of measures and improvements" to more thoroughly check the grounds for granting refugee status. According to a source who did not disclose the details, this is done in accordance with the presidential decree of Donald Trump, issued in January of this year.

The President made the immigration question one of the pillars of his election campaign, campaigning to erect a wall on the border with Mexico, calling for the deportation of illegal immigrants from the country and stating that Syrian refugees fleeing civil war in their homeland are a threat to the security of the United States.

The proposed quota for the number of refugees more than halves the limit set by US President Barack Obama last year. It is also lower than the numbers in the 75 of thousands offered by defenders of immigrant rights, and the limit in 50 of thousands introduced in January, when Trump just became head of the White House.

Over the continents and regions, the proposed 45 thousands of visas are planned to be distributed as follows: 19 thousands for Africans, 17 thousands for the Middle East and South Asia, 5 thousands for East Asia, 2 thousands for Europe and Central Asia, 1,5 thousands for Latin America and the Caribbean .
