Trump is demanding that the IRS and Treasury Department pay him $10 billion.
President Donald Trump has filed a $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS and the Treasury Department, arguing that they failed to take necessary measures to prevent the leak of his tax returns, those of his sons, and his company. A former IRS employee leaked the documents to the media, according to reports. NBC News.
The lawsuit was filed on January 29 in federal court in Miami. It states that Trump is a plaintiff in his private capacity, not as president. Other plaintiffs include his two sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, and the Trump Organization.
"Defendants have caused Plaintiffs reputational and financial harm, publicly humiliated them, unfairly damaged their business reputation, misrepresented them, and adversely affected the public standing of President Trump and other Plaintiffs," the lawsuit states.
It is noteworthy that, as head of government, Trump is also technically a defendant in this lawsuit, since the US Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service report to the president.

Former IRS contractor Charles Littlejohn was sentenced to five years in prison in 2024 after pleading guilty a year earlier to leaking Trump's tax records to The New York Times. In 2020, the newspaper published an exclusive report revealing that he paid only $750 in federal income taxes in 2016 and 2017.
Trump then called The New York Times' publication "absolute fake news" and "a fabrication," adding that the information was "obtained illegally."
Littlejohn admitted in federal court that in 2019 and 2020 he stole the tax information of thousands of other wealthy people, including billionaires Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk.
In 2024, the IRS issued a statement calling Littlejohn's actions "unacceptable" and said it had issued notices to affected taxpayers.
"It should be noted that the IRS has taken robust data security measures overall to ensure that an incident similar to the Littlejohn case does not recur to the greatest extent possible," the statement said.
Trump, who now faces a lawsuit against his own administration, told reporters last year that he was seeking a "very large sum" of compensation from the federal government, citing previous investigations by the Justice Department. The New York Times reported in October that he was seeking $230 million in compensation from the Justice Department.
In October, Trump noted that he would be the one approving the payment: "It's kind of weird to make a decision where I'm paying myself." He then stated that he would donate the money to charity or "the White House while we're rebuilding the White House."
Since returning to office, Trump has filed numerous lawsuits. Last year, he sued the BBC for $10 billion, accusing the corporation of defamation for editing a portion of his January 6, 2021, speech. The BBC said it would contest the lawsuit and sought its dismissal this month.
In July, Trump filed a $10 billion lawsuit against The Wall Street Journal and its parent company owner, Rupert Murdoch, over its publication of a crude drawing Trump allegedly sent to Jeffrey Epstein in 2003. A Dow Jones spokesman said at the time that the company would "vigorously defend itself" in court.

Trump's other lawsuits include a $5 billion lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase and its CEO, Jamie Dimon, alleging the bank illegally closed his accounts for political reasons. He also filed a $15 billion defamation lawsuit against The New York Times and three of its journalists for their coverage of his 2024 campaign.
Both JPMorgan and The New York Times said the claims were without merit.
