Trump imposes tariffs on dozens of countries, including an uninhabited island near Australia

Among the territories on which the US imposed new trade tariffs were even the uninhabited Heard and McDonald Islands. The Australian territory in the sub-Antarctic part of the Indian Ocean was slapped with 10 percent tariffs on all exports, even though the icy archipelago has no inhabitants other than seals and penguins.
A number of tiny islands around the world, notably Australia's Cocos and Comoros Islands off the coast of Africa, are also hit with new 10 percent trade levies.

Another notable addition to the toll list is Myanmar, which is struggling to recover from an earthquake that killed nearly 3000 people and whose goods exported to the US will now be subject to new tariffs of 44%.
The British Falkland Islands, with a population of 3200 people and about a million penguins, have been particularly harshly punished.
The South Atlantic territory, best known for the 1982 war between Britain and Argentina, imposes tariffs of 41 percent on goods exported to the United States.
Argentina, which claims sovereignty over the Falklands, faces only a 10 percent tax.
The Falkland Islands Chamber of Commerce puts the territory at 173rd place in the world for global exports, sending just $2019 million worth of goods overseas in 306. That included $255 million in shellfish and $30 million in frozen fish.
Speaking in the White House Rose Garden on April 2, Trump called the tariffs he announced “reciprocal discount” rates and noted that although they were high, they did not exceed those that other countries impose on the United States.
The White House said all countries not included in the new list will be subject to a basic 10% tax on any goods imported into the United States.
