Trump has named the name of the candidate for the position of judge of the Supreme Court

US President Donald Trump announced that he was nominating conservative judge Brett Cavanaugh for the vacant position of judge of the Supreme Court.

The position of one of nine judges became vacant after 81-year-old judge Anthony Kennedy announced his desire to end his career.

53-year-old Brett Kavanaugh currently serves as a judge on the federal appeals court for the District of Columbia (that is, the capital of the country - Washington).

The judge must approve the position of the Senate. Leaders of the Republican majority in the Senate promised to approve it during the current session before a possible transfer of control over the chamber to the Democrats after the November elections.

Democrats have promised to vote against any candidate proposed by Trump, although several Democratic senators from the states in which the president is popular will be re-elected this year, and it will not be easy for them to vote against Cavano.

Conservative roll

Last year, Trump appointed Supreme Court Judge Neal Gorsach to a place that had been abandoned since the death of conservative Judge Antonin Scalia since the beginning of 2016. That year, Republicans in the Senate refused to consider the candidacy proposed by President Barack Obama before the election.

During the few days before Judge Kennedy’s retirement announcement, the Supreme Court announced a series of decisions by a majority of five votes to four (including Kennedy), in particular on the legitimacy of Trump’s decision to ban US entry for citizens of a number of predominantly Muslim countries .

The US liberal public worries that a new young justice will cement the conservative majority on the Supreme Court for years to come, opening the way to reconsidering or eroding a number of precedents, notably Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case that established abortion rights nationwide, and Obergefell. v. Hodges in 1915, which established the legality of same-sex marriage. Justice Kennedy was a vacillating judge, leading to federal recognition of same-sex marriage, among other things.

Brett Kavanaugh, in a brief speech at the White House, mentioned his Catholic faith and that he sees a judge's job as interpreting the laws and the Constitution "as they are written, not writing them."

In the past, Cavanaugh worked for the independent prosecutor Kenneth Starr, who investigated President Bill Clinton’s activities.

Later, he was an assistant to the Republican President George W. Bush, and was also a clerk under Judge Kennedy, whose place he has every chance to take.

In 2009, Cavanaugh published an article in a law journal in Minnesota, which argued the need for the president’s immunity from prosecution and civil lawsuits during his tenure.

Many commentators felt that this position could have placed Trump on him, given that the Supreme Court may have to consider issues related to the special prosecutor’s process, Robert Muller, who is investigating Russian interference in the election of 2016 of the year and suspicion of Trump’s conspiracy with Russia.
