Trump will appoint Ivanka as a new UN ambassador: hearing test

President Donald Trump said his daughter Ivanka Trump would make an "incredible" UN ambassador, replacing Nikki Haley, who resigned. But, in his own words, Trump would not want to be accused of nepotism if he appointed his daughter as permanent representative.

“I've heard a lot about how good she can be in this position. Ivanka would be dynamite at the UN, but I would be accused of nepotism if you could believe it, right?” he said at the White House on Tuesday afternoon before heading to a rally in Iowa, writes The Daily Mail.

He re-praised his daughter, whom he hired as a senior adviser at the White House, but expressed his concern about the criticism he would have faced if he had been appointed chief diplomat of the United States at the United Nations.

“I think she would be incredible. I will be accused of nepotism, although I am not sure that there is anyone in the world more competent than her. But it's okay. We're looking at a lot of people, and it's interesting," Trump said.

The president said he was considering his daughter's close friend, former deputy national security adviser Dina Powell, as a candidate. “We actually have a lot of names,” he added.

A decision will be announced soon—Trump said Tuesday he expects to name Haley's successor by the end of the month.

Powell has spoken with senior members of the administration about a possible replacement for Haley, CNBC reports. She is already in New York, where the headquarters of the United Nations is located. Powell reportedly called the post her “dream.”

Ivanka Trump, who does not receive a salary for her work at the White House, was suggested as a possible replacement for outgoing Hayley, who, in turn, praised Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner on Tuesday in the Oval Office.

“I can’t stop saying good things about Jared and Ivanka,” Haley said when announcing her resignation.

Kushner and Ivanka Trump were present there and had the opportunity to hear her words in person. Both were considered to be Hayley’s largest allies in the presidential administration.

“Jared is such a hidden genius that no one understands. Ivanka was just a great friend,” Haley added. She said the pair are doing a lot more behind the scenes of the Trump administration than people realize, but did not name specific examples of their accomplishments.

Ivanka Trump responded by posting a photo with Twitter on Hayley and her husband in the Oval Office:

“Ambassador Haley has served America with dignity and distinction. She is a courageous reformer and has been a staunch defender of truth, principled realism and integrity at the United Nations. Jared and I are grateful for her friendship - a true blessing in our lives!” the president’s daughter wrote.

CNN correspondent Poppy Harlow noted that the role that would help Ivanka focus on global issues of the world can bring her success and realization in the area that her first daughter is concerned about in her current post. CNN political director Mark Preston said that the president has the right to nominate anyone to his post, and also suggested that Kouchner and Trump might want to return to New York, where they lived before moving to Washington in 2016.

Ivanka Trump was with Hayley and her father at the end of September in the US General Assembly in New York, where she attended several of the President’s meetings with world leaders and held several of her own briefings. Her speeches were mainly devoted to combating human trafficking: Ivanka called it “the biggest problem in the field of human rights of our time”.

Last November, The New York Times reported that the White House talked about the possibility of replacing Hayley Ivankoy if Hayley herself becomes Secretary of State instead of Rex Tillerson, but then his post was taken by CIA director Mike Pompeo.
