Trump intends to revoke native citizenship

US President Donald Trump said that he is “very seriously” studying the issue of terminating the right to grant citizenship to children born in the United States of non-American parents, writes “Voice of America".

Trump mentioned this in an interview with reporters when he was leaving the White House to speak in Louisville, Kentucky. According to him, granting citizenship by birth is "frankly ridiculous."

“We are studying this issue very, very seriously,” he said.

This is not the first time Trump has raised this topic; he has already made similar statements in October.

But the proposal for citizenship will inevitably provoke lengthy legal disputes about whether the president can change the prevailing view that the 14 amendment to the US Constitution gives the right to citizenship to any child born in the United States, regardless of the immigration status of the parents.

Conservative lawyer James Ho, who Trump appointed judge of the federal court of appeal, wrote in the 2006 year, before his appointment, that native citizenship “protects children [illegal immigrants] no less than the descendants of passengers on the Mayflower ship,” on which one of the first British settlers reached the shores of America.

However, according to Trump, his lawyers assured him that this change could be introduced "simply by decree." He made this argument while still a presidential candidate, when he called native citizenship “a magnet for illegal immigration,” and promised to put an end to it.

Data on the number of women who specifically come to the United States to give birth to a child are not available. According to estimates by the Immigration Research Center, which advocates tightening immigration laws, in 2012, about 36 thousand women born outside the United States came to the country, gave birth to a baby, and then left.

In places like Florida, there is a boom in the so-called “maternity tourism”.

Every year, hundreds of Russians come to the United States to give birth to a child, paying 20-50 thousands of dollars to brokers who draw up travel documents, accommodation and hospital stay for them. A significant number of women from China and Nigeria also come to the United States for the same reason.

Trump’s statement came amid ongoing administration efforts to make changes to immigration policies proposed by his uncompromising advisers.

On Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security announced the termination of a long-standing federal agreement limiting the detention of immigrant children.
