Trump extended sanctions against Russia imposed by Obama
US President Donald Trump extended the sanctions imposed by his predecessor against Russia in 2014 due to the situation in Ukraine, the White House press service said.
The notification to the Congress specifies that the sanctions imposed by Barack Obama will continue to operate after 6 in March for one year, writes RIA News.
According to the president, Russia's actions threaten the security and stability of Ukraine.
In addition, the force decisions of the Russian government pose an extraordinary and extreme threat to national security and US foreign policy.
Relations between Russia and Western countries have deteriorated because of the situation in Ukraine and around the Crimea, which became the Russian region after the referendum. Western countries accused Russia of interfering in Ukraine’s affairs and imposed sanctions.
Moscow responded, repeatedly rejected all the accusations, and stated that talking to her in the language of sanctions was counterproductive.
Recall that over the past six years The United States adopted many sanctions against Russia. In the spring of 2013, the “Magnitsky law”, and five years ago, in March, 2014, the first sanctions related to the annexation of the Crimea. A series of sanctions initiatives have appeared only in the last few months.
12 February Financial Times reported that the United States and the European Union close to agreeing new sanctions against Russia - this time against individuals and companies who participated in the detention of Ukrainian ships in the Kerch Strait.
Last November Russian border guards detained in the Kerch Strait two Ukrainian artillery boats and a longboat, which crossed the Russian border and moved in the direction of the Kerch bridge, were arrested by their crews. According to the Russian side, the ships crossed the border illegally, dangerously maneuvered and did not obey the requirements of the frontier service. Ukraine claims that the ships requested permission to pass under the bridge in the prescribed manner, but did not receive a response from Russian border guards.
US President Donald Trump and the leaders of the EU countries have repeatedly appealed to the Russian authorities to release the Ukrainian ships and sailors. Trump in connection with the incident in the Kerch Strait canceled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which was to be held in December on the margins of the G20 summit in Buenos Aires. The White House ruled out the possibility of a new meeting of the leaders of Russia and the United States before the liberation of the Ukrainian ships.
