Trump and Kim Jong-un finished the summit ahead of schedule: what went wrong
The meeting of the leaders of the United States and the DPRK ended ahead of schedule. The parties canceled the signing ceremony of the joint agreement. The summit ended without any agreement, confirmed the White House.
US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un were unable to reach agreements at their second summit, which was held in Vietnam. However, in the future, countries will continue negotiations, a spokeswoman for the White House, Sarah Sanders, said RBC.
According to Trump, the conditions on which North Korea agrees to abandon nuclear development and the United States to remove sanctions from it have become a stumbling block in the negotiations, writes Medusa. Trump said that Kim Jong-un proposed to close the nuclear research center in Yongbyon, if all economic restrictions against the DPRK were lifted beforehand. For the US, this was unacceptable. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo explained that North Korea is engaged in the production of nuclear weapons not only in Yongbyon, but also at other sites. It was not possible to agree on their closure.
Communicating with journalists, Trump insisted that the negotiations in any case can not be called a failure, despite their early termination. He stressed that Kim Jong-un promised him not to renew the launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles, the last of which occurred in 2017 year.
Trump said he was in no hurry to make a deal with North Korea from the very beginning, preferring not to sign anything than to sign a bad deal. In this case, as пишет Reuters, before the talks, journalists announced the "ceremony of signing a joint agreement." Following the meeting, Trump made it clear that the date of the next negotiations has not been determined. He only expressed confidence that he and Kim Jong-un will meet "soon, very soon."
The American leader also said that all sanctions against Pyongyang remain in force, although the DPRK wanted to lift the restrictions.
“To be honest, I think we will become very good friends with Chairman Kim,” Trump said. "They (North Korea. - RBC) have a huge potential, but it was about sanctions <...> they were ready to make concessions, but not those we wanted."
“He (Kim Jong-un. - RBC) has a definite vision, and it doesn’t quite coincide with our views, but they are closer than they were a year ago,” the American president added.
He also noted that the summit, despite the disagreements, ended on a friendly note, and stressed that the decision not to conclude specific agreements on the results of the event was not its sole one. According to Trump, the DPRK leader promised not to resume testing of missiles and nuclear weapons.
"This is a major failure"
The results of the meeting turned out to be much more modest than the expectations and hopes that were placed on it, after critics regarded the first historical summit in Singapore as more stylistic than meaningful, writes Voice of America.
“This is a major failure,” Joe Cirincione, president of the Plowshares Fund Peace Foundation, tweeted.
He demonstrated the limited format of the summit, the expert added, when there is “not enough time or staff” to work out an agreement.
Ankit Panda from the Federation of American Scientists warned on Twitter that the White House’s expectations of further negotiations "would not necessarily coincide with North Korea’s perceptions."
“Kim Jong-un could have left irritated, as far as we know. Perhaps he does not intend to continue this, ”said Panda.
However, Garry Kazianis, director of the Korean Studies program at the Center for National Interests, said that the lack of agreement is better than a bad agreement.
"There is nothing worse than signing an agreement, only to have something as a result," he told AFP.
“The challenge that represents North Korea’s nuclear weapons is already a reality,” he added. “The conclusion of an agreement that does little or nothing to eliminate this threat would be much worse than an agreement with flaws.”
Thursday was the second day of the US-DPRK summit, it began with the Trump-Kim meeting in a one-on-one format. Even before this conversation, the American leader promised to help North Korea become a "powerful economic power." On the first day of the negotiations, Trump called Kim Jong-un a friend.
