Trump wants to let in only qualified immigrants in the USA

The United States will attract only highly skilled immigrants and will not pay benefits to all who enter the country without exception.

US President Donald Trump stated this at a briefing at the White House, writes “UNIAN«.

“The United States had a system that provided privileges to low-skilled workers. It has created great pressure on American workers and taxpayers. We will only give benefits to skilled workers, people who speak English and have qualifications that will favor our economy. New immigrants will not have the privileges that low-income Americans enjoy,” Trump emphasized.

US President Donald Trump made this statement while announcing on Wednesday, together with two Republican senators, a new bill aimed at limiting legal immigration, writes Voice of America.

Earlier this year, Senators Tom Cotton and David Purdue submitted a bill designed to reduce the number of legal immigrants from 1 million to 500 000 per year.

The bill also calls for restricting the admission of migrant relatives to the country, abolishing the visa lottery and complicating the process of obtaining a green card that allows you to live and work in the country.

Trump twice met with senators to discuss a bill aimed at fulfilling one of his main tasks in reforming the legal immigration system.

Last week during a meeting with voters in Ohio, Trump said that the bill would affect low-skilled migrants.

“Instead of the current migration system of low-skilled labor, a terrible system in which anyone can enter the country — people who have never worked, criminals — we want to introduce a merit-based system that will protect workers, our workers, our taxpayers our economy, ”Trump said.

It is expected that efforts will be skeptical of both Democrats and Republicans, writes CNN.

Cotton from Arkansas and Purdue from Georgia state that the bill "will help increase the wages of American workers by restoring legal immigration levels to their historical norms."

“We are taking action to address some of the shortcomings in our legal immigration system,” Perdue said. Returning to our historically normal levels of legal immigration will help improve the quality of American jobs and wages."

Trump has long stated that he wants to reform the country's immigration system, but any plan to make it seems less of a priority for the administration, which is currently focused on Здравоохранениеtax reform and many international issues.

“What I would like to do is a comprehensive immigration plan,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One in July. “But our country and political forces are not ready yet.”
