The tragedy of MH17: the US State Department called on Russia to stop lying

The United States, Australia and the Netherlands have held Russia responsible for the downing of a Boeing plane shot down over Ukraine on July 17, 2014.

The US authorities are fully confident in the findings of the investigation by the international investigation team that announced the involvement of the Russian military in the crash of the Malaysian Boeing near Donetsk in 2014. About it says in a statement from the official representative of the US State Department Heather Neuert.

“The United States has full confidence in the findings of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT), presented today by the Dutch government prosecutor: the missile launcher used to shoot down airline flight MH17 Malaysia Airlines, arrived from the 53-th anti-aircraft brigade of the Russian Federation, located in Kursk.

Today's statement confirms and adds details to what we said from the very first days of this tragedy: MH17 was shot down by a Russian missile launcher BUK, released from territory in eastern Ukraine, controlled by Russia.

We recall the demand of the UN Security Council that "those responsible ... be held accountable and that all states fully cooperate in establishing responsibility". We urge Russia, in particular, to respect and comply with the UN Security Council resolution 2166 (2014). The time has come for Russia to stop lying and explain its role in the tragedy.

We remain confident in the ability of the Dutch criminal justice system to prosecute perpetrators.

We reiterate our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the victims and call for justice on behalf of the 298 civilians who lost their lives that day.”

After the United States, Australia and the Netherlands blamed Russia for the crash of the Boeing plane, reports Air force.

According to a report on the website of the government of the Netherlands, both countries officially notified Russia of their decision.

A day earlier, an international team of investigators at a press conference announced that the Buk launcher from which the plane was shot down belonged to the Kursk 53rd Air Defense Brigade of the Russian armed forces.

“All the vehicles in the convoy accompanying the missile system belonged to the Russian armed forces,” said Wilbert Paulissen, head of the central criminal investigation department of the Dutch national police.

After that, the Russian Ministry of Defense once again denied Russia's involvement in the MH17 crash in the Donbas.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, after talks with French leader Emmanuel Macron, said that Russia can recognize the findings of the international investigation only if it participates in the investigation.

“To our surprise, we are not allowed into this investigation. The Ukrainian side is working there, despite the fact that Ukraine violated international rules and did not close the airspace over the territory where the fighting took place,” he said. “But in any case, we will treat this carefully, with respect and analyze everything that is stated there,” Putin said.

The Boeing 777 crashed in the skies over eastern Ukraine on June 17, 2014 at 16:20 local time. The plane was traveling on flight MH17 Malaysia Airlines from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. On board were 298 people, they all died. Most of the passengers on board were citizens of the Netherlands.

The citizens of Australia, Malaysia, Great Britain, Belgium, Canada, Indonesia, Germany, New Zealand and the Philippines also died.
