Top 5 Work Visa Countries to Visit Instead of the US
The US introduced a new $100 fee for H-1B work visas in 2025. But there are other countries where skilled workers can find work, writes NDTV.
New H-1B visa holders will now be required to pay a $100,000 fee periodically. Therefore, many students and professionals prefer to study in countries where they can work without such high visa fees.
We present to you a list of countries where students and professionals can build successful careers.
On the subject: The US has introduced a $100,000 fee for H-1B work visas.
United Kingdom
This country tops the list and is often seen as an alternative to the United States. The UK offers a Skilled Worker visa for specialists. This visa allows stays of up to five years with the possibility of extension. Applicants must obtain a certificate of sponsorship (CoS) from their employer, which specifies the position in the UK.
Healthcare workers – nurses, doctors, or adult care professionals – must apply for a Health and Care Worker visa.
Students on a study visa can apply for a Graduate route visa, which allows them to stay in the country for up to two years to work or look for work.
After five years on a Skilled Worker visa, you can apply for permanent residence in the UK – indefinite leave to remain.
Australia
Australia allows foreigners to work in the country on a temporary or permanent work visa. A temporary visa allows employment for a limited period, with conditions limiting employment to a specific job or employer. A permanent work visa allows skilled migrants to live and work anywhere in Australia (depending on the visa type).
There are separate visas for entrepreneurs, investors, business owners, and individuals with “outstanding achievements in profession, sport, art, or scientific research.”
These permanent work visas can later be converted into permanent residence visas.
Canada
Citizens of other countries can apply to work in Canada with an Employer-Specific Work Permit or Open Work Permit. An Open Work Permit allows employment with any employer in Canada, with certain exceptions. An Employer-Specific Permit requires the employer's name and the length of employment.
Germany
Individuals who have received a job offer from an employer in Germany can apply for a work visa, which allows unlimited employment and may eventually lead to citizenship. Applicants must meet certain requirements, including proof of employment and relevant qualifications.
Ireland
Ireland offers work visas for foreign specialists, paid interns, fishing vessel crew members, and other categories. Skilled professionals in any profession can apply for a Critical Skills Employment Permit, while locum doctors, midwives, paid interns, fishing vessel crew members, and others can apply for an Atypical Permit.
The Critical Skills Employment Permit is designed to encourage individuals to obtain permanent residence in the country.
