“Congestion is a huge problem and a huge cost,” INRIX chief economist Graham Cookson said in a telephone interview. The new report "puts some real-world numbers against costs."

The study showed that traffic jams cost American motorists about $ 305 billion in 2017 a year, an average of $ 1,445 per driver. This includes direct costs, such as the cost of time spent on traffic, the cost of additional fuel burned, plus indirect costs, including higher costs of delivering goods and services that companies impose on customers.

Motorists in New York were in a worse situation, the report says. During 2017, they spent $ 2,982 on direct and indirect costs per driver. The report says that in general, the city was faced with a total expenditure of $ 19,2 billion.
