Scientists have identified a possible cause of death due to vaping

According to research at the Mayo Clinic (Scottsdale, Arizona), it is “toxic chemical fumes,” and not oils, that may be responsible for lung diseases associated with vaping. Writes about this USA Today.

The results, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, were based on a biopsy of 17 people, including two deceased patients, with confirmed or possible cases of lung diseases associated with vaping.

All patients smoked electronic cigarettes; 71% of them used marijuana or hemp oils.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported that since April 2019, more than 805 people have been diagnosed with lung damage associated with vaping. Fifteen e-cigarette deaths have been confirmed in 10 states.

Early symptoms of lung disease include coughing, shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Despite the assumptions of some researchers that this may be due to the accumulation of fatty substances known as lipids in the lungs, a Mayo Clinic study showed that in no case were there any signs of lipoid pneumonia.

“Although we cannot discount the potential role of lipids, we have not seen anything that could prove that this problem is caused by the accumulation of lipids in the lungs,” said Dr. Brandon Larsen, a surgical pathologist at the Mayo Clinic and author of the study. “Perhaps this is some direct chemical effect, similar to that which can be seen when exposed to toxic chemical vapors, toxic gases and toxic substances.”

Studies have also shown that products containing THC (the main psychoactive compound in marijuana), or other cannabis oils, such as cannabidiol (CBD), can play a significant role in the development of diseases.

“This is a public health crisis, and many people are working desperately around the clock to find out what chemicals can cause it,” Larsen said. “Based on what we saw in our study, there are suspicions that in most cases we are talking about chemical pollutants, toxic by-products, or other harmful substances in e-cigarette liquids.”

A report by the National Center for Health Statistics (CDC) states that from 2014 to 2018, the percentage of people aged 18-24 who currently smoke cigarettes fell from 16,7% to 7,8%, and the percentage of people in this age group who currently use electronic cigarettes increased from 5,1% to 7,6%.
