The Happiest Americans Live in a Small Californian Town: What's So Special About This Place
The financial website WalletHub has published a new report on the quality of life in American megacities. Based on a variety of parameters, it was determined in which US city the happiest people live, the publication writes Travel & Leisure.
WalletHub rated 182 of the country’s largest cities on 29 happiness indicators, divided into three main categories: emotional and physical well-being, income and employment, and community and environment. Within each category, certain factors were weighted differently based on their impact on happiness. Factors that were doubly weighted included depression rates, physical health index, income growth rate, unemployment rate, number of hours worked per week, and average leisure time per day.
Fremont, California, took first place. Interestingly, five of the top ten happiest cities, including the top three, are located in this state.

Fremont residents report the highest levels of life satisfaction and the lowest divorce and separation rates in the country, which played a key role in the city’s ranking. Fremont also has the fewest adults who report 14 or more days of mental illness per month. Another impressive stat: Fremont leads the nation in the percentage of households with annual incomes of $75 or more.
“Research shows that increasing your income only increases happiness as long as you earn less than $75 a year — anything above that doesn’t have a significant impact,” explained WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo. “So when choosing a city to live in to increase happiness, it’s worth considering not just income, but also amenities like reasonable work hours, short commutes, good weather, and caring neighbors.”
