Affordable and Convenient Cities: Where to Move for Retirees in the US
There's no one-size-fits-all strategy for preparing for retirement, but quality of life and affordability play key roles. That's why some cities are better suited for seniors on fixed incomes than others, says Travel & Leisure.
In Illinois, the twin cities of Bloomington and Normal received high marks for their "excellent social life, quality healthcare, and more," according to a study by AARP, the largest nonprofit organization representing people over 50 in the United States. The study analyzed communities that balance affordability and quality of life. With an average of 131 days of perfect weather per year, and 90% of seniors in the combined city calling it a "great place to live," it's no surprise the area made the list.
The same can be said for places like Easton, Harahan, and Longwood, all of which made the list of best destinations for seniors.

"It's no secret that housing costs in America have risen significantly. So when Americans consider where they want to live in their later years, affordability is a top factor," the AARP report states. "But that doesn't mean they're willing to give up the features that make a city truly comfortable."
To compile the list, AARP selected cities with high quality of life scores and median monthly housing costs below $1,500. The organization then surveyed its regional offices and visited each community to speak with local residents and gain a real-world understanding of what life is like there.
Whether prospective retirees are considering sunny Florida, cozy Midwestern cities, or charming East Coast destinations, the United States offers a variety of destinations that combine affordability with a high quality of life.
For example, the city of Savannah made the list. It's known for its arts and music festivals, excellent cuisine, picturesque squares, and impressive museums. It's also close to a beach—Tybee Island.
On the East Coast, Montplier made the list. It's the only state capital without a McDonald's or Starbucks. The city is renowned for its historic downtown, small shops, and numerous trails for hiking, biking, and skiing, according to the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing.
In the West, Tucson is a popular winter outdoor destination and one of the best places for stargazing.
