Billionaires in the US are building 'snow rooms' to enjoy the winter coolness in the summer heat.

As the climate changes and the usual rhythm of the four seasons falters, wealthy people are creating their own seasons. They're equipping their homes with snow rooms—caves filled with ice and snow, writes The New York Times.

The heat index in Frisco, Texas, recently exceeded 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius). As the asphalt melted under the scorching sun, Caitlin Schebler rested on a bench in what resembled a stylish walk-in cooler. Wrapped in a robe, a cocktail in hand, she wrote in her journal as the snow gently fell.

"It's a pleasant snowfall, not a blizzard," the co-owner of a luxury spa remarked over the phone from her private igloo indoors. "It's the kind you want to enjoy."

Another exotic luxury available to the wealthy can be added to the list: snow rooms. With the help of companies like the Italian TechnoAlpin, which produces snow for ski resorts, and the American Spa Butler, the wealthy are creating veritable "winter worlds" in their homes (and some even on their yachts).

A snow room is essentially the opposite of a sauna: a cave-like space filled with ice and snow. In some rooms, snowflakes gently fall from the ceiling, creating the sensation of being inside a snow globe.

In recent years, such ice rooms have become a coveted perk for the wealthiest. Petrochemical billionaire Mukesh Ambani has one installed in his family's Antilia skyscraper in Mumbai. He also has one on the 440-foot superyacht Serene, owned by Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Ten years ago, when indoor snowmaking technology was just developing, snow rooms were more of a showcase for what could be built for a large budget. According to TechnoAlpin Marketing Director Sarah Brenninger, the company "had to learn to use snow cannons in new ways."

It turns out that spraying a mixture of frozen water and compressed air onto a ski slope is one thing, but turning part of a house or yacht cabin into a miniature tundra is quite another.

"Early on, we had to figure out not only how to create snow indoors, but also how to cool the space and how to make sure the snow lasted," Brenninger emphasized.

When creating the snow room on board Serene, designer Pascale Reymond took into account the tastes of the yacht's then owner, alcohol magnate Yuri Shefler, who reportedly wanted to recreate the atmosphere of a Russian winter.

It's unclear whether this balalaika-and-bast shoe exotica influenced Bill Gates's decision to rent the yacht, but he is known to have paid around $5 million a week to spend time there with his family. When the yacht was acquired by the Saudi prince, the snow room was upgraded: reportedly, the temperature is maintained at -11 degrees Celsius, and snowfalls are triggered by a computer system.

As Kevin Kramer, a broker at Burgess Yachts in Aspen, explained, snow rooms are becoming an increasingly common feature in shipyard offerings: "Yacht design used to be built around parties, alcohol, and lots of bars. Now the emphasis has shifted to fitness and longevity."

According to him, snow rooms fit into a broader trend of spa treatments that alternate between hot and cold therapies.

"An ice bath takes up less space and is much easier to implement," Kramer noted. "But snow rooms are a competitive level at the very top."

Gradually and quite predictably, snow rooms began to appear in the homes of those willing to spend $130,000 and up to create a scene from Bambi in their home.

According to Spa Butler co-founder Tyler Slater, dozens of such spaces have already been built or are under construction in the United States: “We make them out of stone, luxurious marble, and wood.”

It was Spa Butler that created the snow room for Caitlin Schebler and her husband, John, at their spa in Frisco.

"We're currently working with a client in Ohio who wants a snow room with a rough, woodsy aesthetic—split logs, wood, a rustic look," Slater said. "Basically, we can bring any fantasy to life. It's like Disneyland, only with snow."
