A partial solar eclipse can be seen in many parts of the United States today: where and when to look at the sky

Observers from Alaska to New York State will be able to see the Moon take a bite out of the Sun, and the Perseid meteor shower will peak a few hours later, writes Travel & LeisureThe focus this week may be on the eclipse in Europe, but parts of the United States will also see parts of the phenomenon.

During the maximum eclipse on Wednesday, August 12, residents of Alaska, the northern Midwest, and the northeastern United States will be able to see the Moon cover between 10% and 26% of the Sun's disk. This will occur between 13:35 and 13:55 PM ET.

"The further north and east you are, the more noticeable the eclipse effect will be," explained Brian Lada, an astronomy specialist at AccuWeather. "At the maximum phase, the Moon will appear to have slightly nipped the Sun. However, the occultation won't be sufficient to cause a noticeable darkening, so many people going about their daily business might not even realize an eclipse is occurring."

Here's what you need to know if you want to observe a partial eclipse.

How to Safely View a Partial Solar Eclipse from the US

Without special protection, viewing a solar eclipse is only possible during the total phase, when the Moon completely covers the Sun. Since this is a partial eclipse, special viewing glasses are required.

According to NASA, safety glasses must comply with the international standard ISO 12312-2. They must not be used if they are damaged, such as torn, scratched, or otherwise defective. Looking directly at the Sun with the naked eye is prohibited, as this can cause permanent vision damage.

If special glasses are unavailable, NASA recommends using indirect viewing methods, such as a simple pinhole projector (a device with a tiny hole through which light passes, projecting an image onto another surface). Even the gaps between tree leaves can act as natural pinholes, projecting tiny images of the partially obscured Sun onto the ground.

Where and when to observe the eclipse

According to AccuWeather, the eclipse will last for over an hour. It will peak at 13:36 PM ET in Detroit, 13:40 PM in Cleveland, 13:53 PM in Washington, D.C., and 13:54 PM in New York City. If weather conditions interfere with viewing, NASA and the European Space Agency will broadcast live coverage of the eclipse from the zone of totality.

The next partial solar eclipse in the United States is expected on January 26, 2028, and a total solar eclipse in the continental United States will occur on August 23, 2044.

August 12 will be just the beginning of a double celestial event. That same night, the Perseid meteor shower will peak and remain active until the early morning of August 13. The new moon will provide especially dark skies, making it possible to see dozens of shooting stars.
